Six Quirks

  • Feb 7, 2008

For the first time in my blogging experience I’ve been tagged; it feels a bit like being chosen for the cool kids team in elementary school. My witty and insightful friend Mama tagged me; she is definitely one of the cool kids.

The rules:

1) Link to the person that tagged you.
2) Post the rules on your blog.
3) Share six non-important things/habits/quirks about yourself.
4) Tag at least three people at the end of your post and link to their blogs.
5) Let each person know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.
6) Let the fun begin!

1) I have dozens of financial quirks but the most entertaining is my system of making up for losses. Whenever I have a small financial setback that seems particularly unfair: a theft, a lost $100 bill or a friend who “forgets” to pay me back, I start looking for little monetary blessings: an expensive medicine that only costs $10 on the co-pay, the nice lady who hands me a $3 coupon at the pizza store, a free lunch.

I’ve found that it all evens out pretty quickly.

2) Diamonds are not my best friend. I know I must be missing some important female gene but I do not like diamonds, rubies, amethysts or any of that stuff. A few pairs of silver earrings suit me just fine. I don’t even wear a wedding ring.

3) My day is not complete without reading the comics. We take both local newspapers, and while I enjoy seeing their different news coverage, more than anything I love having 3 whole pages of comics to pore over. I often take the funnies with me in the car to read at stoplights, “The light’s green, mom!” or while I am waiting in the carpool line. If I don’t get them read by the end of the day I read them while brushing my teeth at night. This is an addiction I’ve passed on to all my children. We’ve had some pretty hefty fights over missing comics pages.

4) I drink chocolate mud. I like really dark unsweetened chocolate and I’ve never found a hot chocolate dark and strong enough. So I boil milk and add several tablespoons of Pernigotti cocoa and just one little lump of brown sugar. It’s probably the Mormon equivalent of black coffee. Happily, no one else in my family will touch it because it’s so bitter. I love it.

5) Oh my, I love Playmobil. I adore all European toys but Playmobil just captures my heart and wallet. I bought my first set as a 19 year old college student in Vienna. And I won’t reveal how many sets I’ve purchased since. My kids play with them a ton and I love to get on the floor and play with them. I’m always promising myself that I won’t buy anymore because we truly, truly have enough. But have you seen the new collection this year? Fairies! A new circus! Dinosaurs! A pony farm! I want them all.

6) Unless sweat is dripping off my nose or my fingers become numb I do not notice the temperature. After a meeting everyone will talk about how hot or cold the room was and I have to think back, “Was it hot? Was it cold?” I am oblivious. My range of comfort is pretty wide. On the other hand my emotions are like an exposed bundle of raw nerves. I can laugh or cry at the slightest change in emotional temperature.

Ha! I’m done. Now I look forward to hearing some quirks from my friends Jeri, Katie, Jan and my incredibly quirky sister Ruth. I can guarantee you some good stuff from these girls!

Michelle – I bought Playmobil as a teenager too! The covered wagon, a farmhouse, and general store… You convinced me to buy some sets for Harrison, and they are hands down our most loved and played with toys!

This was fun to read! Can’t wait to play along – thanks for the tag 🙂

I love Playmobil! I bought all the fairy sets that they had at the time (I think there are more now) and I got a bunch of the cute animal sets. They are so fun!
