It stinks at my house today

  • Oct 27, 2008

LITERALLY.

‘Cause the sewer pump in the basement stopped working.

I’ll be a good friend and spare you the gory details but my friend Dub, the pump repairman, isn’t squeamish at all and has been educating me with all kinds of juicy sewage info. Just one little tip– you know those flushable cleaning wipes? Not really so flushable.

So Celia, my friend, I won’t be flying out for a visit because I just bought myself a glamorous pair of sewage pumps instead.

Besides throwing open the windows (who minds a few bugs when your house smells like a cesspool?) my best remedy for the stink is baking. Bread, of course, and pumpkin chocolate chip cookies.

Do you have this recipe? You need it.

2 boxes spice cake mix
1 can squished pumpkin
2 cups chocolate chips (OK, maybe 3 or 4…)

that’s it. stop looking for the water, oil, eggs etc. ya don’t need em.

Let it be known that I am a baked goods snob– brownie mix will never pollute my pantry, margarine is banned from my fridge. But 10 minutes at 350 and you’ve got cookies any confectioner would envy.

Ah the sweet smell of pumpkin and spice and well, anything but sewage.

***************

The frosting? That’s only for days that you really want to spoil your children. It’s yummmmmmmmy.

Let’s see: 1/2 cup butter, 1 cup brown sugar, a splash of milk (2-3 tablespoons?) microwave for 1 minute. Add powdered suger. 3 or 4 cups probably. I don’t know– whatever looks right to you.

May your day smell better than mine.

My condolences on the stink. But huzzah to your good attitude! So glad you have a Dub to take care of it for you.

Once when I was growing up one of our pet hamsters found its way to the heating ducts in our house. At Christmastime no less. My poor mom–she simmered cinnamon sticks on the stove nonstop but it still couldn’t quite mask the dead/dying rodent smell. I can’t smell cinnamon sticks to this day without smelling a hint of hamster!

    Long comment, sorry.

I just keep telling myself that there could be worse things to unexpectedly spend significant amounts of money on – like hospital bills. Please pass the cookies.

So that’s why that cute little white truck sat in your driveway all day.
It also explains why we could see straight through to the back yard as we drove by. Oh the joys on home ownership. At least it was a gorgeous day.

    Ewww. Sorry about the stink.

As for the cookies, I make those too, although I find spice cake mix unbelievably hard to find here, and because I live so close to sea level, also have to add an egg.

I like Erik’s Pollyanna comment. Well said.

I might just have to try your cookie recipe out to get us in the Fall/Holiday mood. It’s October and time for all that kind of yummy food and yet, when it’s still 95 degrees it’s hard to want to turn that ‘ol oven on. But…they look GOOD and worth it!

Sorry about your new purchase! 🙁

Ooh, that sounds yummy and easy. Thanks for posting!

Sorry about your sewer pump 🙁 I say a little prayer every time I flush one of those flushable wipes.
