service with a smile

Ben is taking the ACT today–ack! right now!– and for the last few years we’ve been kindly and gently reminding him that his college entrance, career, future happiness and most likely the fate of the entire universe hinge on this one test.

As my nerdy and dutiful son he’s spent many an hour on utahmentor.com taking practice tests and simultaneously chatting on Facebook. This morning he was up bright and early for the 8 a.m. exam and I gave him a bleary eyed farewell.

At 7:59 the phone rang, “Mom, I need my calculator. It’s in my backpack. Can you bring it right now?”

With no time to grab a coat or shoes I ventured into the snowstorm(which thankfully canceled every soccer game today) and limped breathlessly, calculator in hand, into the high school where the test was about to begin. Spying me from the end of the hall the proctor called, “You’d better run!”

But I couldn’t, so I hop shuffled to her side where she said, “You can take the calculator to your son but I have no way of determining which classroom he’s in.”

So I lunged toward the first doorway, waving the precious instrument, searching the room for Ben. No luck. And the next. And the next. And the next. And you probably won’t believe me, but 14 classrooms later at the very end of the hall I finally spied Benji in all his nervous glory.

The classroom proctor chuckled out loud at my appearance and I quipped, “Yeah, I know I look really cute.”

Because this is what the entire junior class of Skyline High saw this morning:

At least my toenails look nice.

The only thing wrong with this post is the fact that you have snow. On the ground. In April.

You really are cute early on a Saturday morning, my friend.

There’s a lot more that’s cute there than your toenails, dear!

My son took the ACT yesterday too. Helicopter mom that I am though (you know, always hovering), I had everything laid out for him the night before: calculator (with brand new batteries), three sharpened no. 2 pencils, printed ticket, ID, and two granola bars. I’m such a dork. I even played Mozart for him while he ate his breakfast! (I know, I know . . . )
