smile for me

  • Feb 13, 2011

At times, my photography obsession can be a little obnoxious to those I love– “you just keep cooking while I snap a few frames…” “can you turn towards the light a bit?” ” yes, yes, I promise to delete that swimsuit photo.”

But their willingness to smile paid off just a bit this week in the when out of the blue Shutterfly sent me an email asking to purchase rights to three of my little photo books. It’s not quite the compensation that they offered a few years ago when they bought my first book but it means $200 in store credit for me per book and $100 per person featured therein. And yes, that adds up pretty nicely for a family of six. 🙂

Even bringing this up seems trivial– especially in our world with much graver concerns– but for me this felt a bit like winning the lottery without buying a ticket. By necessity, I’m living quietly these days, I’ve turned down photo shoots and even a wedding (sniff, sniff) because my energy is limited. I’m not silly or vain enough to think that I’m the best photographer out there– I’m completely intimidated by most photography blogs I read– but it felt good to know that something I created over two years ago is still making people smile.

Life is full of surprises. None of us can imagine what good thing is coming around the bend. As Isak Dinesen wrote– “God made the world round so we would never be able to see too far down the road.

You deserve every bit of it. I loved those books so much.

It has been a surprisingly emotional day for me. I honestly don’t even know why. And that quote at the end brought tears to my eyes.

    Thanks.
