the best, prettiest, tallest Christmas tree

our best, prettiest, tallest Christmas tree ever from Michelle Lehnardt on Vimeo.

We did our Black Friday shopping online (sorry UPS guy), packed sandwiches and pie, squished 9 of us into a car with only 8 seats and drove two hours northeast to find the perfect tree. Once we passed Evanston, Wyoming, nearly every car we saw coming towards us had a Christmas tree draped over the roof (you can click here for all the info on buying permits). As we entered the forest we saw families tending bonfires and building snowmen. Since there was less snow than usual, we drove a little further into the forest, shielding our eyes in the golden light, splashing across streams and ducking reflexively as low hanging branches brushed the car.

We got out of the car and walked straight to the perfect tree. It seemed too good to be true. Usually we wander in circles discussing the merits and faults of two dozen trees, finally compromising on one with huge bare sections. But this tree was absolutely perfect, even on each side, tall and straight…

Still we missed all the time walking around, so we goofed off first.

In truth, everything about the day seemed too good to be true– everyone excited and happy to go, everyone getting along,  laughing until our sides ached. Will we fit in two cars next year? Will Stefan and Heather even live in Utah? Will Hans bring a girlfriend?

No one knows the future. But for now I’m enjoying my impossibly beautiful tree (photos don’t do it justice) and my impossibly lovely family.
