I was an irresponsible parent last night and skipped both the 8th grade awards night(Stefan said, “Ah, they’ll just give them to me at school in the morning.”) and Ben’s Chamber Orchestra Concert(“Don’t worry mom– it’s so long you could never sit through it anyway.”) to attend a book signing with Leif Enger.
Yes, LEIF ENGER. Peace Like a River Leif Enger.
Peace came into my hands when Gabriel was a nursing baby. I balanced Gabriel on one arm and the book on the other. Before I’d finished even ten pages I knew I’d discovered genius and by the final page I was completely in awe of Mr. Enger and his golden pen.
So I pushed it into Erik’s hands, into Ben’s, and Stefan’s(who was fighting severe asthma just like the main character in the book); I bought a dozen copies for friends and relatives.
Leif was in town promoting his new book(which I’d already purchased; thanks, Amazon.com, please don’t tell the lovely ladies at The King’s English bookstore.) and was completely generous, humble and kind.

i just closed the book The Host and am coming up for air, only to find you raving about another author…whom i’ve never read anything by. my house needs cleaning, i am sleep deprived and neglecting all my worldly obligations. i am a slave to engaging authors. curse them. curse them all! ♥

You’ve convinced me. And since you couldn’t find your copy (for me to borrow) I just ordered it from Amazon for my book shelf.
