Conference Edition

Like most Mormon mommies everywhere my hands down favorite talk was from Russell Ballard. He spoke of motherhood and gave useful advice to the whole family, “Dad, help with the housework. Give your wife a day off once in a while.” “Kids, pick up your toys! Make your bed. Tell your mom that you love her every day.”

And while I love any message that encourages other people to vacuum the carpets I especially enjoyed Elder Ballard’s advice to ME– to slow down, to enjoy my children, to worry less about perfection and spend more time just laughing. I desperately wish I could send this message back to myself 10 years ago and say “LISTEN UP!”

A close second was Dieter Uchtdorf’s talk on “The Faith of Our Fathers.” Erik teases me that I could watch Uchtdorf on mute and still enjoy the message because he is so darn good-looking. This is true, but I would miss hearing his lovely German accent.

OK, seriously now. I loved his message that we all have a spiritual heritage even if it isn’t a Mormon heritage. Living in this area where we are truly the only family without pioneer ancestry I have just a wee bit of an inferiority complex about my lack of connections. Elder Uchtdorf spoke of his appreciation for faithful people everywhere.

General Conference rarely, if ever, teaches anything new. Rather, the speakers take old truths and invigorate them with stories and personal experience. Together, the old truths and new insights renew and encourage me.

Michelle- I totally agree with you…Elder Ballards talk was so inspiring…and as for NO pioneer heritage add Whitehead’s to the list. Growing up we always laughed and made fun of the people in the ward who always talked about it and so to say bragged about it…but now that we have all grown up we realize why they do and are sometimes…embarassed that we don’t…But it doesn’t matter…it’s just hard to come to that point to realize…maybe one day we will…but as for today we are just as great of a people as they who have that heritage!

Yes, both were excellent talks. I took both of them in as well. Especially Elder Ballards. I don’t think that I have enjoyed a talk as much as I did his.

Okay Michelle, I am no longer a secret. Its probably more fun this way anyhow.I too love Pres. Uchtdorf!Do you think he’s tan or is that his natural skin color? JK. He speaks with such warm conviction. My pioneer roots go back to my Mexican Catholic grandma. I related to his talk as well.
