bumping Ben’s video to the top.

If the world were ending… from Ben Lehnardt on Vimeo.

The past few weeks have been a flurry of film making for Hans and Xander. Elections were held early this year (which was NOT a good idea– it just made senioritis set in early) and the boys made ‘farewell’ videos. In the interest of sharing ideas and just for your entertainment, I’m posting them here. First, the video Hans filmed (and Ezra edited) for two of his best friends– the outgoing President and V.P.– one who had never been kissed…

Next (and shortest), the SBO slide show. Each student body officer gets exactly one minute to show a slideshow of childhood photos as they walk down the aisle to announce their replacement. Since Hansie’s office always involves something silly and creative (last year the boy was carried down on a palanquin), Hans built a cardboard rocket ship and we made a slideshow to Baby Einstein’s “We’re going on a trip in our favorite rocket ship”– a song which fits Hans so perfectly, it could have been written for him. Sadly, the slideshow didn’t get played and Hans was carried down the aisle on his friends’ shoulders in silence with people asking, “Is it a coffin?” You can see Hansie looking a bit bemused as he emerged from his spaceship. It’s perfectly OK, because Hansie’s life holds plenty of happy golden moments. But just imagine with me what it might have been like with the video…

Then, the Star Wars themed video to turn over their jobs to the new people:

“Class Officer’s Day Off” yes, Xander’s the only male class officer. It’s been fun for him.

and finally, Ed’s prom invitation. Which also, sadly did not get used because someone else asked the girl first. Filmed by Hansie in one cut. It’s pretty awesome.

Ben ought to submit that video to the Department of Education. It’s powerful. While I understand the perceived reasons behind the movement toward STEM education – hey that’s where the big money jobs are! – I think it’s very myopic to believe that there will be no negative impact if we cut humanities, music, and art. An education without creative thinking is not the solution. Well done, Ben. Sorry if those ideas were not the intent of the video, but that’s what it provoked in me.
