Lucky

Has iTunes changed your life? We’re obsessed with it at our house.

Every child has their own playlist (Mary’s reads: ‘peony’s songs’) and they love finding the music that speaks to them and then playing it in the kitchen ALL. DAY. LONG. How many times can you stand, “Davy, Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier…”

Gabriel is especially adept at it and whenever I say, “I like that song!” he rushes to the computer and adds it to my playlist. A passing boat at Lake Powell was playing “We Will Rock You.” He stored the name in his little head, clicked on to the iTunes store when we got home and asked, “How do you spell we-will-rock-you?”

Unsurprisingly, Ben is our greatest source of new music. He always has some new discovery to share. It’s not uncommon for me to come down to my computer in the morning and find a little stack of quarters by the keyboard that signal someone bought a new song last night.

I pocketed the quarters yesterday morning and clicked on the newly purchased song, “Lucky” by Jason Mraz.

Goodness me– it’s beautiful. I pulled Erik into the kitchen and made him dance with me.

On about the fifth repeat, Ben looked up from the couch. “Mom? Dad? Can you tone it down a bit?”

I refunded his money. 😉

I have an iPod, but I’m the only one here. Not for lack of wanting on Bunch’s part though. She’s saving her dimes and nickels to get one. Doc has an MP3 player called a Cali Rio. He has to strip off the Apple proprietary info from every song he downloads off iTunes so that it’ll play there. We don’t feel bad about that, cause, like, we actually bought the song. And of course Gator has just recently chimed in on the matter…but the only music he wants is Star Wars theme songs….which he has on CD. So we’re holding out for the iPods to keep dropping in price round here. I’m sure mine will one day kick the bucket and I’ll be sad. It’s got all my personal files on it in addition to the music (I use it as a backup hard drive for my computer).

Thanks for your suggestions, btw. I’m really grateful for the perspective of my friends…especially those with more parenting experience than I have.

Whoa! I’m slowly reading all your older posts & had to comment on this one. I have a sneaking suspicion I know who’s boat was playing, ‘we will rock you!’. 😃
My son sang that sing all summer afterwards. How funny!
