The night before our state holiday (July 24th), we sent out an open invitation, plied my sister for party ideas and put three pans of ice in our freezer.
Happily three sets of victims (families) were willing to join us for some mid-summer winter craziness.
First on the menu was cold hot chocolate. It’s just chocolate milk slightly frozen, but when you serve it in red cups and dollop whip cream on top everyone will beg you for the recipe.
Our lunch was a potluck of whatever people had in their fridge– thankfully our friends keep sandwich fixings and fruit on hand to go with our peanut butter and Nutella.
Our homemade ice blocks dissolved a bit too quickly (my sister recommends 24 hours freezing time), but every grocery store carries ice and for $15 ($1.50 a block) you can entertain 25 people for several hours.
Everyone finds their own way of going down and up the hill (extra points for those with broken arms and legs).
Of course, the danger of a planned food fight with marshmallows…suddenly all food becomes fair game. I’m pretty sure there are laws against wasting Nutella.
Actually, I was so busy sliding and laughing and talking, I’m surprised I got any photos at all.
Swinter is the perfect party for families, kids or teenagers planning a cheap date. And when it ‘s time to clean up? Pick up the garbage, put away the table and leave the ice behind.
