Stefan came sauntering into the kitchen at about 5 p.m. today. “How was play practice?” I asked(in a brave departure of Lehnardt timidity Stefan is in the school musical this year).
“Oh, I didn’t have practice today. I’ve been up in my room doing homework.”
“But I didn’t see you come in?”
“I snuck in so that I could avoid the chore monster.”
Ben laughed out loud. “Ha! Most kids sneak out of their house to play but we sneak in to do our homework!”
I just grumbled. I wanted those dishes done.
On the chore docket today were Christmas thank you notes to the grandmas. It’s not that hard to write a few lines of gratitude, but it produces endless wisecracks and whining. “Does it have to be more than one sentence?” “What if we broke that toy already?” “I just feel grateful in my heart; isn’t that enough?” Darn kids. I could certainly write them myself in a matter of minutes but it is infinitely more painful and more important to make them do it themselves.
I’d had enough of the kids by bedtime. The entire evening was filled with fighting and dog piles and “MOOOOOOOm!” But Gabriel did provide one last good laugh at bedtime.
I was reading Gabriel his beloved Presidents book and the current chapter featured Bill Clinton. I was a good girl and tried not to pass on my biases to my five-year-old. But that never works.
“Is he the guy whose wife is running for president?”
“Yep.”
“And you don’t want her to win?”
“Um, not really.”
“Well, you don’t have to worry. She’ll be dead soon anyway.” I was a bit horrified until Gabriel explained:
“All the presidents in this book die.”
He does have a point. Whether we like our leaders or not we’ll eventually get new ones (though I do wish even the Clinton’s a long happy, healthy retirement); and ultimately our own choices will determine the course of our life much more than any presidential election.

Ahh yes, the Clintons. My neighbors here in Westchester. They make it very hard for me to “love my neighbor.” But, I bought one of these (link below) for a white elephant gift for a holiday party and so it makes me like her a little more because I got some good laughs at her expense. She never gets my vote though, not for senator OR president.

Sounds like a lot of what is going on in our house…only you can write it so much better! Thank you notes on our on top priority, but nobody wants to do them but me! And we’ve been keeping our eyes on the results from Iowa.
